People need to be reminded more often than they need to be instructed – Dr Samuel Johnson
Since we are in the midst of Lent, I thought I would take this time to briefly touch on what the Church teaches on some matters. Lent is a time of fast and abstinence. What does that mean?

According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church, fasting is refraining from food or drink to some degree. Normally that means that during fast days you eat only one full meal and two smaller meals during the day. You refrain from snacks and eating between meals.
Abstinence means refraining from eating meat, specifically on the Fridays of Lent. Just a note, chicken is considered a meat.
Also to remain in communion with the Church you are to receive the Holy Eucharist at least once a year. If you only receive once a year then it must be during the Easter Season. In the United States this extends from the First Sunday of Lent to Trinity Sunday. If you are aware of serious sin, then you must also go take advantage of the sacrament of Reconciliation prior to receiving the Eucharist.
More detailed guidelines have been published in the diocesan newspaper One Voice. prestige the divx online
This is by no means an exhaustive discussion. We must always keep in mind that we are entering the most holy time of the year for us as Christians, so therefore we should prepare and conduct ourselves appropriately.
