The header and a section of the US 1870 Census for Huntsville, showing Fr. Jeremiah Trecy and his mother, Bridget. It was common at that time for freed slaves to adopt the surname of their former owner, or sometimes the man who freed them, explaining why the cook and her daughters also are named "Trecy".
